Effective October 1, 2022, the Department of Advanced Mathematics has been merged with the Department of Physics to form the Department of Physics and Mathematics.
The Department of Advanced Mathematics is one of the first departments at the Shipbuilding Institute (NSI).
In 1930, Professor M.S. Britman (1894–1942) became its head. In 1929, M.S. Britman was appointed professor of mathematics, and in 1930 he established the Department of Higher Mathematics. The war prevented him from defending his doctoral dissertation, which he had completed in 1941. He died in Mykolaiv in 1942.
During the war, the institute was located in Przewalsk, and the head of the department at that time was Ivan Vasilyevich Bispen, Candidate of Technical Sciences and Associate Professor.
On January 1, 1946, I.V. Bispen was transferred to the LKI, and from that time until 1955, the department was headed by Associate Professor Petr Dmitrievich Kalafati (1911–1968), Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, who graduated from the Mathematics Department of the Odessa Institute of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 1933. He defended his candidate’s dissertation in 1937 under the supervision of the distinguished mathematician M.G. Krein.
After P.D. Kalafati left the institute, the department was headed by Alexander Maksymovych Basanets (1899–1970), a Candidate of Technical Sciences and associate professor. His lectures were distinguished by their precision and rigor, and always captured the interest of his students.
In October 1951, Lev Lvovich Verbytsky, Associate Professor and Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, began working at the department. In 1958, by order of the Main Directorate of Political and Mechanical Engineering Higher Educational Institutions, he was appointed head of the department, a position to which he was subsequently re-elected twice. For 35 years, he worked with dedication, mentoring and educating generations of students and young faculty members of the department. He was a man of the highest moral principles, a living mathematical encyclopedia, and fluent in three foreign languages.
L.L. Verbytsky was one of the first at the MKI to begin introducing computer technology into the educational process in 1961. Under his leadership, the department taught programming in various languages in addition to the advanced mathematics course. As a rule, Associate Professor L.L. Verbytskyi was a pioneer in mastering these languages. Since then and up to the present, the department’s scientific and methodological seminar has been held regularly.
The main achievement of Lev Lvovych Verbytskyi’s professional career is the methodological school he created and the team of like-minded colleagues he nurtured and united through his ideas.

Currently, the department employs highly educated candidates of sciences and associate professors: R.I. Zarosky, T.A. Yurchenko, G.I. Yakymovych, A.M. Shykhvatov, A.O. Fomina, and L.T. Saprykina; senior lecturers V.I. Kopytin, F.S. Dvornoy, M.A. Birillo, S.I. Login, as well as the talented lecturer and scientist V.G. Kichigin, who transferred from the Department of Theoretical Mechanics. It is pleasant to recall that the foundation of the newly established (1987) Department of Information Technologies was laid by faculty members of the Department of Higher Mathematics: Suslov S.V., Prykhodko S.B., Mazykina N.A., Sicheva G.I., Zimmerman G.G., Cheryomusheva M.A., L.G. Chervinska, Y.A. Batrak, A.Ya. Kaplun, and T.T. Chubchik, and the department itself, under the leadership of K.V. Koshkin, became one of the university’s leading departments.
The department always fondly remembers the associate professors who served there at various times: R.I. Gavrilova, A.S. Kolodyazhny, M.H. Klyn, E.M. Dryz, A.S. Khrystenko, and senior lecturers I.E. Sametska, L.E. Vasilyeva, and O.G. Ivanova. Their teaching materials are still used by students today.
In September 2009, Yevgen Yuriyovych Nedelko, Ph.D. in Engineering and Associate Professor—a graduate of the M.I. Kalinin Leningrad Polytechnic Institute—was elected head of the department for a five-year term. After completing his postgraduate studies in 1980, he defended his Ph.D. dissertation in the field of mechanics of deformed solids at the same institute. Yevgen Y. Nedelko is the author of approximately 60 scientific and methodological works.
Currently, the department includes NUK Professor A.M. Kuznetsov; Professor I.O. Mulenko, a renowned scientist in the field of plasma physics; and Associate Professors R.I. Zarosky, T.A. Yurchenko, R.M. Gimpel, L.T. Saprykina, O.O. Shcheglov, O.M. Shikhvatov, S.A. Ustenko, A.O. Fomina, NUK Associate Professor S.D. Titov, as well as lecturers and senior lecturers M.B. Bondarenko, A.V. Varshavsky, I.I. Lastovetskaya, V.F. Lebedeva, V.I. Nikolaev, L.S. Pastukhova, N.I. Popova, N.A. Rudenko, V.G. Sysoev, and A.E. Taraneko. Shortly before this, a generational shift began at the department, and the ranks of the department’s faculty were joined by T.V. Yemelyanova, Yu.E. Tsybin, O.V. Maiboroda, I.V. Petkov, N.O. Tseberna, A.M. Kolegaev, E.O. Kondratenko, N.O. Romanchuk, S.V. Reznik, and O.L. Chornyi.
The Mathematics Office is now open, with its primary purpose being to provide consultation and academic support. Thanks to the office heads, I.I. Lastovetskaya and S.V. Reznik, students now have the opportunity to improve their knowledge and receive clear explanations on any questions that may arise while studying mathematics.
From the fall of 2015 to the spring of 2019, Alexander Oleksandrovych Gaysha, Ph.D. in Engineering and Associate Professor, served first as acting head and later as head of the department.
In 2019, Y.Y. Nedelko was re-elected as head of the department for a five-year term.
As of spring 2020, the academic and teaching staff of the Department of Higher Mathematics consists of the following: Yevgen Yuriyovych Nedelko, Head of the Department, Ph.D. in Engineering, Associate Professor, Professor at the National University of Kyiv; Mykhailo Valentynovych Zhirnov, Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor; Oleksandr Valeriyovych Mayboroda, Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor; Nataliya Oleksandrivna Romanchuk, Ph.D. in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor; Serhiy Dmytrovych Titov, Associate Professor at NUK; Armen Varshavovych Varshavov, Senior Lecturer; Ihor Vasylovych Petkov, Senior Lecturer; Yuriy Yevgenyevich Tsybin, Senior Lecturer; Svitlana Volodymyrivna Reznik, Lecturer; Anna Fedorivna Romanovska, Lecturer; Nataliya Oleksandrivna Tseberna, Lecturer; Oleksandr Leonidovych Chornyi, Lecturer.
From November 2021 until the merger with the Department of Physics in October 2022, the duties of department chair were performed by Mikhail Viktorovich Ushkats, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Professor.
Every year, the department hosts the first round of the All-Ukrainian Student Mathematics Olympiad, the winners of which have the opportunity to compete against the best students from universities across Ukraine in the second round of the Olympiad, which is usually held in May in the city of Sumy (until 2014, it was held in Sevastopol). Over the past five years, faculty members have conducted additional classes focusing on methods and techniques for solving Olympiad problems and highly complex problems.
Since 2005, Associate Professor S.D. Titov of the National University of Kyiv has regularly organized and conducted student seminars titled “Optimization Theory: Examples and Problems,” where students present reports on optimization methods, game theory, linear programming, the application of mathematical methods to economic problems, solving economic problems using modern software and computer technology, as well as other equally interesting topics.

In 2014, Associate Professor O.V. Maiboroda and Senior Lecturer I.V. organized and conducted the “First Math Games”—a competition among teams composed of students from Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding, V.O. Sukhomlinsky Mykolaiv National University, and Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University. Since then, the annual “Mathematics Games” have become a fine tradition, and in various years, in addition to students from the aforementioned universities, high school seniors from Mykolaiv have also participated. These competitions test participants’ knowledge of mathematics, their ability to think quickly and logically, and their teamwork skills, while helping to promote mathematics among students.
In 2016, the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding hosted the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference for Students, Graduate Students, and Young Researchers titled “Current Issues in Modern Applied Mathematics.” The main organizer of the conference was the Department of Higher Mathematics at the National University of Shipbuilding (Assoc. Prof. Y.Y. Nedelko, Assoc. Prof. S.D. Titov, Lecturer S.V. Reznik). Since then, this conference has been held annually at our university, with the majority of presentations delivered by students and participants coming from a wide range of cities across Ukraine.
