Artem Khan
Artem Khan
Artem was killed in the early months of the full-scale invasion, but for over a year he was considered missing in action and a prisoner of war. In the Mykolaiv region, a funeral was held for Ukrainian defender and boxer Artem Khan. He was born on April 6, 2001. He became interested in martial arts as a child. He began boxing and practicing mixed martial arts, training at the Mykolaiv SDYUSSHOR-6 sports school. His coaches recall that within a few years of training, Artem had surpassed his peers in the sport. He became the Ukrainian junior boxing champion and earned the title of Candidate Master of Sports. Artem joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the age of 19, signing a contract. He served in the 79th Airborne Assault Brigade. By the time the full-scale Russian invasion began, he had already been in the combat zone for a year, but he never told his parents that he was directly participating in the fighting. In late February 2022, the young man was awaiting rotation and was set to return home; he had even packed his bags, but then a full-scale war broke out… Artem last contacted his father on April 29, 2022, and on April 30, he did not return to Ukrainian positions from the battles. Since then, he had been considered missing in action. But in December of that same year, Artem’s mother managed to find out that her son was being held captive. His name was spotted on enemy lists. This news gave his family great hope of seeing Artem again, but, unfortunately, in January 2024, all hopes were dashed. DNA testing confirmed that Artem died on the day he failed to return from his mission—April 30, 2022, near the village of Dibrova in the Donetsk region. The hero was only 21 years old…

Lieutenant Maksym Yamkovyi of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, call sign "Major," stood his ground against the Russian occupiers who were furiously attacking Mariupol from the very first hours of the full-scale invasion. Maksym was born in 1996 and lived in the Vinnytsia region. In 2018, the future hero was drafted into military service, and within a few months, he signed a contract with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He fought bravely in the Joint Forces Operation zone, near Rubizhne in the Luhansk region, and it was there, on the front lines, that he decided to dedicate his life to the army—enrolling in the Hetman Sagaidachny National Army Academy. Just a year later, Second Lieutenant Yamkovyi was assigned to the 36th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Bilinsky to continue his service as a tank platoon commander. He ended up on the eastern outskirts of Mariupol, where the front line with the Russians and the “DPR army” ran, as the enemy had not abandoned its plans to break through a “land corridor” from the territories it occupied in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions to Crimea. Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Mariupol immediately came under devastating attacks, with constant bombing and artillery shelling. The soldiers of the 36th Marine Brigade bravely resisted the enemy, using all available forces to prevent its advance toward the city, where hundreds of thousands of civilians were present. On February 27, during one of the fiercest battles near the village of Pavlopil, Maksym died while saving the lives of his crew members. By presidential decree, for his personal courage and selfless actions in defending Ukraine’s state sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as his loyalty to his military oath, Lieutenant Maksym Yamkovyi was posthumously awarded the Order of Danylo Halytskyi. Maksym is survived by his wife, young daughter, parents, and dreams and plans that were never meant to come true.

A young defender of our country, Senior Private, Senior Rifleman—camera operator and driver in Military Unit A7354 of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Bohdan Serhiyovych Hrytsenko, born on December 10, 2001 (call sign "Jesus"), who was born in the city of Voznesensk, Mykolaiv Oblast. With the start of the full-scale invasion, Bohdan, without hesitation and despite his age, made one of the most important decisions of his life and volunteered to defend our country. At the time, he was a student at V.O. Sukhomlynsky Mykolaiv National University in Mykolaiv, dreaming of becoming a teacher and educating children. The local Territorial Defense Forces initially refused to accept him into their ranks, pointing out that he was only 20 years old, but my brother’s persistence and desire to defend his homeland prevailed, and Bohdan joined the ranks of the 123rd Brigade, 188th Battalion. Throughout his life, Bohdan stood out for his tenacious character and leadership qualities. He began his combat career by actively participating in the defense of the city of Mykolaiv, for which he received an award. When the city of Kherson was liberated from enemy occupation forces, he and his brigade were redeployed to the Kherson region on the right bank of the Dnipro River, where he fought bravely against Ukraine’s enemy until his last breath and saved the lives of several of his comrades. His comrades and commander described Bohdan as a true warrior—courageous, brave, and fearless. He always wanted to be as useful as possible to the army. He was a sincere, open, and reliable friend. He approached all assigned tasks diligently, conscientiously, and responsibly. He constantly pushed forward and refused to hide behind his comrades’ backs. He loved life, and above all, he loved Ukraine. Unfortunately, on December 29, 2023, in the village of Krynky, Kherson Oblast, while carrying out a combat mission—the evacuation of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel—my brother was killed after coming under enemy mortar fire. Awarded: the Presidential Distinction of Ukraine “For the Defense of Ukraine.” By Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 559/2022 dated August 5, 2022; the Order “For Courage,” 3rd Class, No. 184 dated March 26, 2024; the “Commander’s Distinction of the 188th Combat Unit of the Troops of the Ministry of Defense” No. 330 dated July 28, 2023; the honorary distinction “For the Defense of Mykolaiv” dated June 20, 2024, No. 164r; the “Dignity and Honor” badge dated May 23, 2024, No. 178; the Cross of St. Nicholas dated October 16, 2024, No. 655.

As early as 2013, as part of the Mykolaiv Oblast team, he took 2nd place at the first-ever Ukrainian Youth MMA Championship. In 2014, he won a bronze medal at the Ukrainian Youth Championship in the 93 kg weight class. He was an active participant in the club’s development, taking part in exhibition matches, charity events, and social initiatives. With the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Oleksandr unhesitatingly stood up to defend Ukraine. He initially served in the local territorial defense forces and later joined the ranks of the 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Ataman Ivan Sirko. He commanded a platoon, becoming a true leader, mentor, and authority figure for the soldiers. He often repeated the words that became his life’s motto: “Who, if not me, will defend our land!” May the memory of this Hero, who gave his life for his country’s freedom, live on.
