Confucius Institute
Confucius Institute — a network of educational institutions dedicated to promoting the Chinese language, culture, and arts. As of 2019, there are 530 Confucius Institutes operating worldwide.
The stated goal of the Confucius Institutes is to promote the Chinese language and culture, support local communities on the international stage, and foster cultural exchanges. In recent years, Confucius Institutes have faced criticism due to the alarmingly growing communist influence in the countries where they operate.
The Confucius Institute program was launched in 2004. Hanban (the official International Office of the Chinese Language Council) develops the CI programs and serves as their direct administrator. The institutes operate in collaboration with local departments of colleges and universities around the world. Funding is shared between Hanban and the host institutions. An additional program run by the Confucius Institutes also collaborates with local K-12 schools.
China compares Confucius Institutes to other organizations promoting language and culture, such as the Portuguese Cultural Institute, the Brazilian Cultural Center, the British Council, the Alliance Française, the Italian Institute, the Instituto Cervantes, and the Goethe-Institut. However, unlike these organizations, many Confucius Institutes operate directly on university campuses, raising concerns regarding academic freedom and political influence.
There are currently four such centers in Ukraine:
• at Kyiv National Linguistic University
• at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University
• at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University
• at the South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after Konstantin Ushynsky
