Title: Honorary Doctorate in Ecology (2019)

Igor Volodymyrovych Nakonechny was born on January 12, 1964, in the town of Berezivka, Odesa Oblast. He graduated from the Odesa Agricultural Institute in 1986. Doctor of Biological Sciences; dissertation on “Structural and Functional Organization of Parasitocenotic Communities in the Ecosystems of the Northwestern Black Sea Region” in the specialty 030016 Ecology (2010); Professor (2013). Currently serves as a professor in the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Technologies.

Author of 125 scientific publications, including 67 professional articles on the ecology of zoonotic pathogens, the ecology of vectors, and other related topics, as well as author and co-author of 5 monographs and 3 textbooks. Member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ministry of Education and Science, “Environmental Protection” section. Expert of the FAO/WHO Working Group (Geneva Center) on the ecology of pathogens of particularly dangerous zoonoses. From 2011 to 2021, he was a member of the specialized council D 26.371.01 at the Research Institute of Agroecology and Natural Resource Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and an expert of the Higher Attestation Commission (in the specialty 03.00.16. Ecology).

From 2018 to 2021, he served as the principal investigator and co-investigator on projects focused on the conservation of the Tiligul Estuary:

1. “Ecological and Monitoring Studies of Biodiversity in the Tiligul-Dnipro Interfluve,” State Registration No. 0116U003789;

2. “Technical, Environmental, and Economic Justification for a Set of Measures to Preserve the Tiligul Estuary Ecosystem”;

Based on the results of these studies, a project was developed for the conservation and restoration of the Tiligul Estuary through the regulated use of the Dnieper River’s flow; in 2019 and 2020, this project participated in a competition for scientific projects on strategies for the protection of estuaries in the northwestern Black Sea region.

 From 2018 to 2020, he served as the principal investigator and co-researcher on state-funded research titled “Assessment of the Current State of Faunal Communities in Terrestrial and Riparian Ecosystems of the Region,” commissioned by the State Enterprise National Atomic Energy Company “ENERGOATOM,” South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant Branch, Ukraine, 55001, Mykolaiv Oblast, Yuzhnoukrainsk.

Co-investigator and head of the field research team for the project “Assessment of the current status of the main animal groups in the project area of the Kyryakivsky (Kamianobalkovy) wind farm, as well as a forecast of the potential impact of construction and operation on the region’s faunal complexes.” Client: LLC “UK “Wind Parks of Ukraine”; subcontractor: I.I. Shmalgauzen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine, 01030, Kyiv, 15 Bohdan Khmelnytskyi St.

Over the past two years, I have served as the leader of a working group and as a developer of grant proposals submitted for government funding:

January–February 2020 — “Operational Monitoring and Surveillance Studies of Wild Migratory Waterfowl as Potential Carriers and Vectors of the COVID-19 Pathogen”; The project was approved by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and recommended for collaboration with leading scientific institutions within the WHO system.

March–May 2021 – “Operational monitoring, population assessment, and justification of studies on wild carnivores of the Kinburn Peninsula as potential carriers of natural infectious agents”; Client: “Svyatoslav’s White Coast”; based on the results of the research, the relevant permits were issued by the Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

April–September 2021 – “Field surveys of rodents in the steppe habitats of the Bug-Dnieper interfluve.” Client – National Nature Park “Kam’yanska Sich.” Based on the results of field research, a report was submitted and published on the ecological conditions of the last remaining population in Ukraine of the common mole rat Ellobius talpinus Pallas, 1770, a typical native species of the zonal Steppe (a species listed in the IUCN Red List, the Red Book of Ukraine, and the Bern Convention list), and a program of expanded research on potential populations in the Southern Steppe region of Ukraine was developed.

All three research projects contain the compiled material and have been submitted as applications to a number of international grant-making organizations in the field of environmental research, as well as to competitions organized by relevant Ukrainian organizations.
