 YURI DANIILOVICH ZHUKOV,

RECIPIENT OF THE UKRAINIAN STATE PRIZE IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, HONORED INVENTOR OF UKRAINE,

DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING, PROFESSOR

Yuriy Danylovych was born in Kyiv on March 30, 1951. He received his secondary education in Mykolaiv, graduating from Specialized School No. 22 with a gold medal in 1968. After graduating from the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Institute (MSI) in 1974, Yuriy Danylovych Zhukov began his professional career at the MSI as an engineer in the research sector. In 1981, he defended his candidate’s dissertation and was appointed head of the research sector. From 1992 to 1993, he served as a leading research fellow at the MBI Research Department; from July 1993 to December 2024,  — Head of the Department of Marine Instrumentation at the National University of Shipbuilding (MKI); in 1994, he defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Ensuring the Safety of Small-Tonnage Vessels in Design and Operation.” In 1996, the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine awarded Y.D. Zhukov the academic title of Professor; in 2000, he was elected a Member of the Academy of Shipbuilding Sciences of Ukraine; in 2011, he became a Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology; and in 2016  — he was named an Honored Inventor of Ukraine.

Since defending his doctoral dissertation, Yuriy Danylovych has successfully combined his research work with organizational and managerial activities aimed at implementing research findings and innovative developments into production: since 1993 – founder and director of the research and production association “Advanced Measuring Instruments Company (AMICO™)”; since 1997 – Director of the joint venture “Polysystema” of the State Standard of Ukraine; since 2000 – founder and director of AMICO Service LLC; since 2001 – founder and director of AMICO-Oil LLC and AMICO Komplekt LLC; from 2002 to 2004 – Chairman of the Supervisory Board of JSC PII “Mykolaivagroproekt,” Chairman of the Audit Commission of CJSC PIK “Prominindustria” (Kyiv),

Innovative projects based on Y.D. Zhukov’s inventions in the field of specialized computer systems have been implemented over the past 20 years alone, commissioned by both domestic and foreign clients: on more than 10 floating docks; at over 50 facilities for the extraction, storage, transportation, and distribution of oil and petroleum products; at over 15 terminals for the transshipment of liquefied petroleum gas and various petroleum products; at over 10 food industry enterprises; as well as at all domestic nuclear power plants, etc.

Today, the staff of the Department of Marine Instrumentation and its branches within the AMICO Group have unique experience in the development, production, and implementation of high-tech solutions for enterprises and industrial facilities in Ukraine and many countries in Europe and Asia, among others.

During this period, based on the axiomatic theory of polymetric measurements developed by Professor Zhukov and under his guidance, a team of students, colleagues, and subordinates developed several generations of competitive computer-based information and measurement systems known as SADKO™ (systems for automated remote monitoring of parameters of liquid and bulk media, control of various technological processes and production operations involving them, etc.). Systems in this series provide high-precision real-time monitoring of the quantity and quality of liquid and bulk cargo (liquid and liquefied energy carriers, aqueous solutions and corrosive substances, cement and grain, etc.) in tanks of unlimited volume. System functions for monitoring storage parameters (product temperature and level, position of the product-water interface, product mass) and energy carrier quality (density, octane or cetane numbers, moisture content, gas component ratios, etc.) are patented and certified by relevant organizations in Ukraine and Russia.

Y.D. Zhukov founded a scientific school dedicated to the development of the theory, methods, and technical means of polymetric measurements; the design of intelligent information-measurement systems and information support systems for managerial decision-making in complex technogenic production facilities and processes; as well as the creation of specialized technologies and equipment for the production of such systems, their metrological support, maintenance, etc.

Professor Zhukov is actively involved in promoting innovation and scientific and technical creativity as part of the training of highly qualified scientific personnel (PhDs and candidates of sciences) through the postgraduate and doctoral programs at the National University of Kyiv.

In addition, Professor Zhukov has made a significant contribution to the adaptation, development, and implementation of modern digital technologies for the design and construction of ships and other floating structures based on the principles and methods of cutting-edge naval engineering, as well as their practical application in the operations of domestic and international shipbuilding companies. Based on the “Spasky Technopark” LLC established in 2003, a number of investment projects involving foreign capital were implemented, resulting in the emergence of several modern design and engineering bureaus in Mykolaiv, namely “Ship Design & Engineering Ukraine LLC,” “Aker Yards Design Ukraine LLC,” “Euro Ship Design LLC,” “C-Job Nikolayev,” and others. Professor Zhukov was the initiator and head of these design bureaus for over 15 years. During this period, under his leadership, over 250 projects and sets of working design and engineering documentation were developed for the construction of vessels for various purposes (dry cargo ships and tankers, cruise ships and ferries, research and special-purpose vessels, supply and drilling vessels, etc.) commissioned by shipowners and shipbuilding companies from over 20 countries worldwide (the Netherlands, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, Norway, Canada, etc.). Among the world’s leading design and shipbuilding corporations, these design bureaus have established a reputation as reliable partners that provide high-quality engineering services tailored to the specific requirements of each client, delivered in a timely manner and at competitive prices.

To provide a new generation of professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills required for the time- and location-distributed development of design and engineering solutions for modern shipbuilding, in 2008 Professor Zhukov, in cooperation with leading global providers of CAD and shipboard automation systems (the British AVEVA, the Finnish CADMATIC, and the French Schneider Electric), as well as with the support of domestic design bureaus “Aker Yards Design Ukraine,” MDEM, and “S-Job Mykolaiv,” established the Institute of Modern Ship Engineering (IMSE) within the structure of the National University of Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering (NUSOE) and became its head. New courses and teaching materials (including multimedia resources) were developed and implemented to ensure the competitiveness of graduates in the modern global shipbuilding labor market. All courses have undergone many years of testing, and nearly 100% of graduates have found employment at shipbuilding enterprises in Ukraine, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and other countries.

In addition, he has received a number of other awards and honors from government and non-governmental organizations: the “For Valiant Labor” medal (1970), the “60th Anniversary of the Armed Forces of the USSR” medal (1978), “Excellence in Higher Education of the USSR” (1989), the Certificate of Honor from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and “For Merit to the National University of Kyiv” (2010), “For the Development of Education” (1911), “For Dedication to the Cause” (2014), and “For the Development of Ukrainian Sports” (2015).
