1. SOCIAL, INFORMATION, AND LEGAL PROTECTION PROGRAM

One of the primary objectives set by the Student Union Committee is to provide social, informational, and legal protection for students. To this end, the National University of Shipbuilding maintains a registry of students eligible for special benefits. As of November 1, 2020, the university has 102 orphaned students, 45 students with disabilities, and 1 student affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

Social protection for students is provided in accordance with the requirements of current legislation. For students in eligible categories, priority was given to addressing the following issues:

— awarding of basic and supplementary scholarships;

— a health retreat at the “Korabel” Sports and Health Camp of the National University of Kyiv (Koblevo village);

— providing financial assistance to low-income students, as well as moral and financial incentives for academic achievement and active participation in research activities;

— providing New Year’s gifts to children living with student and semi-student families;

— providing dormitory housing for the duration of their studies;

— employment opportunities for students during their free time;

— providing informational and educational support.

The Student Union Committee makes recommendations during the drafting of orders and directives that directly concern students’ academic, housing, and living conditions.

In addition, the NUCS Student Union Committee participates in addressing issues related to the payment of scholarships to students, the conditions for granting and the amounts of additional payments, bonuses, rewards, and other incentive payments; it recognizes students for their achievements in academic, research, and community service; and it addresses issues related to the provision of financial assistance.

Once per semester, students from low-income families and students eligible for preferential treatment were given the opportunity to receive financial assistance from the Primary Student Trade Union Organization of the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding (hereinafter referred to as the Primary Student Trade Union Organization of the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding).

To protect the rights and interests of students, the Student Union Committee has drafted a collective agreement between the university administration and the Student Union Committee. The purpose of signing the Agreement is to address various social issues and to engage in direct dialogue with the leadership of the National University of Shipbuilding. The document addresses issues regarding the introduction, review, or modification of weekly student course loads and work during academic semesters (in accordance with the law), as well as compliance with course load standards and the even distribution of class hours throughout the week.

To achieve its goals, the NUCS Student Union Committee actively engages in social dialogue with the University administration. The NUCS Student Union Committee represents the interests of undergraduate and graduate students on the Academic Councils of the institutes, faculties, and the University.

The Student Union Committee participates in the work of the university’s scholarship committees regarding the awarding of scholarships, the review of the Regulations on Scholarship Support for Undergraduate and Graduate Students at NUK, and other related matters.

The University Student Union Committee is also directly involved in managing the student dormitories. Together with the dormitory administration, it provides necessary support to students living in the dormitories and assists in organizing and conducting cultural and sporting events. The Student Union Committee, together with the dormitory management and the university administration, is working to improve living conditions in the student dormitories. The situation is improving every year, but there are certain issues that need to be addressed. The main concerns of the student body are the replacement of electrical wiring in the dormitories, the erratic operation of the elevator, the replacement of gas stoves with electric ones (in Dormitory No. 1), and the operation of the cafeterias. To accelerate the resolution of issues faced by students living in dormitories, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation between the dormitories, the administration, and the university’s student union committee.

The Student Trade Union Committee also participated in the discussion and drafting of amendments to the Ukrainian laws “On Trade Unions, Their Rights, and Guarantees of Activity,” “On Collective Agreements and Contracts,” and developed recommendations regarding the activities of primary student trade union organizations in connection with the entry into force of the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine ‘On Higher Education’ Regarding Issues of Student Self-Governance.”
