Applicant's Statement of Purpose

Applicant's Statement of Purpose

A motivation letter is a document in which the applicant, in a free-form written statement, provides information about their personal interest in enrolling in a specific major, educational program, specialization, or educational institution, as well as their expectations, academic achievements, and other activities, highlighting their range of interests and inclinations. The document is submitted by the applicant to the institution of higher or pre-higher vocational education, to which, if technically feasible and necessary, copies (photocopies, scanned copies) of materials confirming the information set forth in the letter may be attached.

A statement of purpose is required for applicants planning to pursue education at NUK at the levels of “Associate of Applied Science,” “Bachelor of Science,” and “Bachelor of Arts” (based on a complete secondary education, the “skilled worker” qualification, or a diploma of junior specialist, junior bachelor, or associate bachelor) and “master’s degree.”

Requirements for submitting a cover letter
  1. The cover letter should be tailored to the chosen field of study and major.
  2. If an applicant plans to submit electronic applications for admission to two or more programs, the number of motivation letters must correspond to the number of selected programs (see the list of competitive programs in the Admission Rules for Higher Education at the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding in 2022, the Admission Rules for the Separate Structural Unit “Professional College of Shipbuilders of the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding” in 2022).
  3. If an applicant plans to submit online applications for two or more degree programs within the same field of study, they may submit a single statement of purpose.
Requirements for the cover letter
  1. The cover letter should be 1–2 pages of typed text, formatted using the Times New Roman font (font size 14; line spacing 1.15 or 1.5; margins: left – 30 mm, top and bottom – 20 mm each, right – 15 mm).
  2. A cover letter consists of three parts: the header, the salutation, and the body of the document.
  3. The header is a section of the cover letter located in the upper right corner that includes information about the recipient (the person to whom the letter is addressed) and the sender (the person writing the letter).
    • The following information about the recipient is provided in the order listed: institution, title, academic rank, and the last name and initials of the person to whom the letter of motivation is addressed.
    • The following information about the sender is provided in the order listed below: last name, first name, and patronymic (in full, in the genitive case); status (e.g., applicant) with an indication of the intended major; contact information (email address, phone number).

 Example:

To the Chair of the Admissions Committee

National University of Shipbuilding

named after Admiral Makarov

Prof. Y. I. Trushlyakova

applicant for the program

142 Power Engineering

Serhiy Serhiyovych Serhiyenko,

serh@gmail.com

Tel. 050-050-0505

  1. The salutation is placed on the line following the header, in the vocative case of a noun, centered on the page in uppercase letters and/or bold type.

Example:

Dear Yevgeny Ivanovich!

or

Dear Yevgeny Ivanovich!

or

DEAR YEVGENY IVANOVICH!

  1. The body of the document, which begins on the line following the salutation, consists of three sections: an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion.
  • The introductory paragraph (2–3 sentences) provides information about the purpose and main reasons for writing the letter of motivation, explaining why the applicant has chosen NUK as their institution of choice.

 Example:

One of my top priorities is to pursue my education at the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding, given that it has consistently demonstrated its leadership in every field for decades and enjoys an impeccable reputation in the education sector. I know that its graduates are in high demand both in Ukraine and abroad. That is why I, too, really want to join the ranks of those whose success stories began at the National University of Shipbuilding.

  • The main body (2–3 paragraphs, or 7–10 sentences) should explain why you have chosen to pursue your education at NUK in a specific major and/or academic program. In this section, it is appropriate to address the following:

indicate what interests the applicant in the chosen major or educational programs;

analyze which existing social skills, psychological traits, aptitudes, interests, abilities, etc., will be useful in mastering the major or educational programs. In this section, the applicant may also provide the following information about themselves (if the relevant data and technical capabilities of the Unified State Electronic Database on Education are available, the applicant may attach copies (photocopies, scanned copies) of materials confirming the information provided in the letter):

a) participation in competitions/academic contests and the applicant’s placement;

b) participation in master classes, training sessions, seminars, projects, conferences, symposia, etc.;

c) the presence of published scientific articles or abstracts;

d) proficiency in foreign languages;

d) playing sports;

e) engaging in volunteer and charitable activities;

e) military experience and/or combatant status.

outline their career prospects, that is, explain what the applicant plans to do after graduating from NUK;

demonstrate why the NUCA should give preference to the applicant’s candidacy, perhaps by citing previous academic achievements (in high school, college, or during their bachelor’s program, etc.).

Example phrases:

I am seeking to pursue a higher education degree in the field of 142 Power Engineering, with a primary focus on the “Internal Combustion Engines” curriculum, for the following reasons:

  • I hope that the modernization of the sector will continue…;
  • I dream of developing…
  • aims to investigate…
  • I want to understand deeply…

 I should note that the plans I intend to bring to life will become a reality for a number of other reasons as well. First, I am an analytical thinker. Second, I have experience in design work, as I attended a relevant club during my school years. Third, I also speak several languages (English, German), which will allow me to access foreign sources of information. Fourth, …

  • The concluding section summarizes the arguments and points previously presented in the motivation letter. In this section, the applicant should express their readiness to pursue their education at NUK in their chosen major or academic programs, as well as their full awareness of their plans. It is also appropriate to express gratitude for reading the letter.

Example:

So I believe that I am fully capable of becoming a student at NUK and pursuing a degree in Energy Engineering (Specialty 142), because I have the strength, the determination, and an unwavering desire to join the ranks of the technical elite of our city and the entire country! I feel that this is possible with NUK!

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter!
