The Department of Theory and History of State and Law offers degree programs at the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education in the field of study 081 “Law.”
The history of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law began in 2004, when the Department of Theory and History of State and Law was established and approved by an order of the rector of the Admiral Makarov Ukrainian State Maritime Technical University (UDMTU) dated February 9, 2004. Initially, the Department of Theory and History of State and Law was part of the Mykolaiv Humanitarian Institute of USMTU; now the department is part of the Faculty of Maritime Law at NUK.

In their teaching, the department’s faculty members take into account that today’s law graduates will need to adapt to the rapid pace of social and technological change that characterizes 21st-century society.
The overarching research theme for the department’s faculty is “The Imperatives of the Development of Law and the State,” which encompasses the diverse academic interests of the department’s faculty. Since its founding, the Department of Theory and History of State and Law has maintained a tradition of hosting a student research and practice conference. The first conference was held at the department in 2004 (“The Constitution—the Foundation of National Legislation”); by 2018, the conference’s name had been changed to “Imperatives of the Development of Law and the State.”
Faculty members participate in the work of prominent academic and professional associations related to their research interests, namely: the International Association of Legal Historians (T. M. Fedorenko); the Ukrainian Association of International Law (I. V. Dmitrichenko); the Mykolaiv Regional Bar Association (D. V. Baranenko); and the Ukrainian Bar Association (O. G. Nabokova, I. I. Nedokhlebov).
