The Forensic Laboratory was established in 1998 in Mykolaiv as part of the Department of Law at the Admiral Makarov Ukrainian State Maritime Technical University (now the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding).


The purpose of establishing the forensic laboratory was:

  • ensuring high-quality training of qualified professionals in the field of law;
  • familiarization with the basic methods and tools of investigative work;
  • deepening theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of criminalistics.

The educational process, which draws on the teaching and methodological resources of the Forensic Laboratory, is designed to develop students’ ability to solve complex specialized tasks and practical problems in the field of forensic science, as well as a range of competencies:
1) general (ability to apply knowledge in practical situations; work in a team; apply acquired knowledge in practice);
2) specialized (ability to collect, document, and analyze information necessary for the adjudication of cases in criminal proceedings; ability to locate persons whose whereabouts are unknown and to determine the causes and circumstances of their disappearance; skills in locating missing (lost or stolen) property, objects, and animals; ability to use scientific and technical means applied in the detection and investigation of crimes).
The criminalistics laboratory is under the general supervision of the dean of the Faculty of Maritime Law at the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding.

The laboratory makes use of the facilities of the Faculty of Maritime Law; it is equipped with computers, has Internet access, and is equipped with legal search engines and printed regulatory materials.
